I Remember When: My First Job

I remember back to my official first job. I'm not talking about a summer job like mowing lawns or such but a actual pay check job. My first job was at Hardee's fast food restaurant. It was, and still is to this day, located at the corner of 28th st and Grand Central ave. in Vienna West Virginia. It was the spring of 1989, I remember the feeling of actually being able to say I had a job. Unlike most of my friends at the time I loved being able to say I had a job. I worked there for a years and in that time I worked every shift and position except for Store Manager. To be a store manager back then you had to be out of high school and have at least some college experience for Hardee's to consider you for the position. It was a great job, (back then) to teach responsibility, team work, and multi-tasking. As long as I can also remember my mom has always been into taking "Kodak Moments" of everything. I know we chuckle about it sometimes, but photos help fill in the memories we may have forgotten.

Yep that's me the slack shouldered, belt up high, ready to work 16 year old. The job was a experience that I believe helped build part of my foundation for my working ethics today, (aside from what I learned from my father and grandfather). When I started working for Hardee's they had old training videos and I still remember laughing to myself about the hats and checkered shirts they wore in the training videos that were outdated compared to the uniforms we wore when I started there.

I was able to locate one of the training videos from 1986 on Youtube for your enjoyment. :-)

Back then minimum wage was $3.35 an hour and that was good money for my first job in those days. When I started working there they were still promoting the movie Ghostbusters II coming out in theaters. They still had the "Moose" cups, insulated drink bottles that you could get refilled for 59 cents, and all varieties of kids meal toys trinkets.

To this day I still have my Hardee's insulated drink bottle I carry with me to work every day. I haven't stopped in to the local restaurant to see how much they charge for a refill nowadays, I'm sure it is probably not the 59 cents printed on the side of the bottle anymore. I remember the manager that was there when I started, his name was Charles something. He used to let us make all sorts of "Frankenstein" sandwiches for our meal breaks. I'm talking 1/4 pounder cheeseburger topped with ham and cheese, hot dog sauce, roast beef, and all sorts of condiments on top of it! Those were the days.
